Harden's says
Gordon Ramsay's second branch of his Japanese concept has taken over the grand Lutyens-designed bank building in King Street formerly occupied by Jamie's Italian. Inspired by Tokyo drinking dens of the 1930s, it follows the formula of his four-year-old Mayfair original with the TV chef's take on Japanese cuisine and cocktails.
Harden's survey result
Summary
“All the makings of a fun restaurant!” are – say supporters – to be found at Gordon Ramsay’s spectacular pan-Asian destinations, whose original (on Grosvenor Square) was followed up in February 2025 with the launch of a stablemate on the 60th floor of 22 Bishopsgate in the City, for which Gordo is seeking a 24-hour licence (and also by a sibling in Manchester). It’s the City newcomer nowadays that inspires most interest in our survey, and fans love the “beautiful food… cocktails… room” and of course “the amazing views”. Even they can note “service that’s a little hit and miss” though, and predictably there are many who feel “you’re taking a second mortgage for the view”. Meanwhile, the Mayfair branch is notably less well-rated and often judged “overpriced” or plain “disappointing” on account of its “very average food”.
Summary
Will Gordon Ramsay succeed ’up north’, where he’s failed to make waves ‘darn sarf’? In terms of grandeur alone, this May 2023 opening (too late for feedback in our annual diners’ poll) eclipses the London original as it occupies the former banking hall of a gobsmackingly grand building – a Portland-stone-clad monolith designed by Lutyens for the Midland Bank in the 1930s – also home in its time to Jamie’s Italian. On the menu, the same rather pricey pan-Asian small plates.
For 34 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
