“Everything you want in a country pub” according to fans of this thatched free house on the Phillimore Estate, a short drive outside Henley-on-Thames and on the edge of the Chilterns. Run by David Holliday and with chef Alex Sargeant – both ex-Harwood Arms in Fulham – it has a “delightful dining room with food that’s at the top end of gastropub grub” and for less ambitious fare, head to the adjoining ‘burger barn’.

“A great country retreat” – this “wonderfully well-run” thatched pub is older sibling to the Hart Street Tavern and the work of Harwood Arms alumni Alex Sergeant & David Holloway. Kudos, too, for their new, shed-like Burger Barn, serving patties, hotdogs and rosemary fries “with views of the fields and some new letting rooms”. (“Expect it to be rammed with Henley's glitterati on a sunny summer evening.”)

A “lovely” thatched pub serving a “short but excellent menu” of food “up to the standards of a London restaurant” – owners Alex Sergeant and David Holloway, graduates of stellar Fulham gastroboozer the Harwood Arms, have put their know-how to excellent effect in south Oxfordshire. “It manages to retain the atmosphere of a village pub while offering very high-quality dining”“locals still use it for a drink”. Two years down the track, the pair have opened their second venue, Hart Street Tavern, in nearby Henley-on-Thames. Top Tip – “wonderful garden serving great pizzas from a huge pizza oven and drinks from a horsebox”.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
