In a “fine old building” close to the English border, this coaching inn (“cosy old bar” plus “sophisticated restaurant”) is “consistently good”, especially if you go for one of the “good- value” set menus (featuring “some unusual selections but all very well executed”). It’s part of the growing House of Caradog family, which now spans numerous local outposts: a sibling hotel, a bakery, an art shop and café, plus inn and restaurant The Walnut Tree, two miles off. Top Tip – “lovely and plentiful” afternoon tea – “everything is handmade and elegant” with a “superb tea choice and great array of savouries and cakes”.

This classy coaching inn not far from the English border is a real all-rounder: whether you want “great cocktails” in the bar, an “amazing” afternoon tea, or a prix-fixe meal, the “interesting and ever-changing menu” is “always cooked with skill”. There are two local siblings: the mostly vegetarian The Chapel, a five-minute walk away, and acclaimed restaurant The Walnut Tree, ten minutes away by car.

“This old coaching inn is always a pleasure to visit”, with its “cosy warren of bars” and “carefully modernised and light dining room”, serving “delicious and inventive seasonal food with an air of understated luxury”. It’s also “the best place” for an “unbeatable hand-crafted afternoon tea that delivers on detail, taste and presentation”.

This “lovely hotel” (sibling to the famous Walnut Tree nearby) is “always reliable” for chef Wesley Hammond’s “high-quality, fresh and tasty” food and “service that makes you feel special”. There’s a “great variety for veggie/vegan diners”, and a choice of the elegant Oak Room or clubby Foxhunter Bar to eat in. Afternoon tea is a particular strength here – “everything is delicious but a special mention must go to the warm, freshly baked scones which are so light they almost float off the cake stand!”.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
