1. Tudor Farmhouse British, Modern restaurant in Clearwell High Street - GL16
2019 Review: “A lovely boutique hotel in a quiet village in the Forest of Dean” – this small, rural venture offers “very good food with a local accent” in its beamed, stone-walled dining room.
2. The Walnut Tree British, Modern restaurant in Llandewi Skirrid Llanddewi Skirrid - NP7
“Shaun Hill’s cookery book is great”: “so full of clear sanity and common sense – qualities that shine through in all you are served” at this famous, rural Welsh pub (which was established in the 1970s as a pioneering foodie mecca under former owners, Franco & Ann Taruschio; and which Shaun has run for the last decade). It’s “an unfussy but welcoming environment” – “a bustling dining room full of people very happily tucking in, and with nice associated cottages to stay in”. Its ratings suffered this year though, with a new theme in reports that it’s “still good, but a bit in decline”: “no complaints, but it was just not the superb meal we were expecting”.
3. Clytha Arms British, Modern restaurant in Abergavenny
2017 Review: “Andrew and his staff make one feel like a king” at this well-established inn, where, for example, Sunday lunch can be “a joy! Slabs of tender pink sirloin, delicately golden Yorkshires, a stunning variety of fresh veg… all in front of a roaring log fire”.
4. Inn at Penallt British, Modern restaurant in Penallt
2019 Review: “Good pub food with nice views and good walking” – all are amongst the attractions of this friendly country pub in the Wye Valley. The menu focuses on meat, and there’s also a tasting option (although it’s an extended traditional meal rather than much in the way of small-plates frippery).
5. The Whitebrook, Restaurant with Rooms British, Modern restaurant in Whitebrook
“The Wye Valley setting is remote and peaceful” at Chris & Kirsty Harrod’s restaurant-with-rooms, which is again enthusiastically endorsed for its “fascinating (I had to ask about the ingredients, many of which seem to have been foraged or grown locally) cooking with a stunning level of skill, care and attention going into every plate”, plus “interesting wine pairings” and “informed and professional service”. In October 2019 the couple purchased the freehold, with plans to up the degree of luxury and number of rooms.
6. The Court Dining Room, Llansantffraed Court Hotel restaurant in Clytha Llanvihangel Gobion
2018 Review: Gorgeously located in rural Monmouthshire, this attractive country house hotel just outside Abergavenny has been run by the same family for 20 years. Reviews in the 2018 survey repeated the some-for-some-against style of recent years, for sceptics “not as expected”, for fans “all-round exceptional”.
7. The Hardwick British, Modern restaurant in Abergavenny Old Raglan Rd - NP7
“High-quality ingredients, deftly cooked to delicious effect” is typical of the high praise often evident in feedback on Stephen Terry’s restaurant-with-rooms: a stop-off, en route to the Brecon Beacons. More sceptical reports, though, feel the food is merely “OK”, and there’s also the odd gripe about “chaotic” service.
8. Gliffaes Country House Hotel British, Modern restaurant in Crickhowell
Stuck in the heart of rural mid-Wales means we have access to some great local produce, primarily beef, lamb and cheese. We try to make the most of this and of everything else that is seasonal. We base our dinner menu on what is in season and it tends to change about 5-6 times a ...
9. The Angel Hotel British, Modern restaurant in Abergavenny 15 Cross St - NP7
Close to the English border, this attractive hotel – sibling to the well-known Walnut Tree – is a versatile spot, where chef Wesley Hammond turns out high-quality food (including a “great choice for veggies and vegans”) in the clubby Foxhunter Bar or more elegant Oak Room. Head to the Wedgwood Room for their “amazing”, award-winning afternoon teas featuring “exceptional gluten-free savoury pastries” (“liked the doggy bag for the extra cakes later”).
10. Raglan Arms British, Modern restaurant in Llandenny Usk
2016 Review: This country gastropub has recently changed hands and the kitchen is now run by Matthew Long; according to one early report, “the food is at least as good as it was” (with a focus on seafood, as befits a Cornish chef), but the décor has become “more functional”.
