“A great pub with rooms in a lovely village just outside York” which makes “a good meeting place in a village just off the A1” and whose contemporary style is very pleasing and slick (“dare one say it, very unlike the North of England....” says a Bradford-based diner). Service is “professional yet friendly” and “the varied menu remains consistent making it always a pleasure to go there”.

4. Wetherby Whaler restaurant in York Nether Poppleton - YO26

This famous chippy with old-school décor (est. 1989) is the flagship of a seven-strong Yorkshire empire – and a reliable “go-to on a long journey up the A1”. The main event is “great and traditional fish ‘n’ chips” with a focus on haddock but a long list of other scrumptious fish to eat. If you don’t fancy staying on site, you can demolish the victuals overlooking the wharf and Wetherby bandstand nearby.

Open in May 2024 on the Aldwark Manor Estate luxury hotel near York, this new restaurant doesn’t yet inspire a huge volume of feedback (too limited for a review) but looks worth investigating, with the odd report of “an amazing venue, with quality ingredients and a great atmosphere”. The room itself has a high-pitched roof and large windows overlooking the grounds, and the entry level menu is a seven-course selection for £95 per person.
