Featured North Berwick Restaurants
1. Number One, Balmoral Hotel British, Modern restaurant in Edinburgh 1 Princes Street - EH2
“One of Scotland's finest” – the “super club-like” basement of this landmark hotel has long been one of the city’s main culinary attractions, providing a splendid mix of sophisticated decor (especially given that it’s subterranean), alongside “excellent service, luxurious tasting menus and high-quality wines”. Former Northcote head chef Matthew Sherry took over at the stoves in 2021 and devised new three- and seven-course menus focused on Scottish produce.
2. The Cellar Fish & seafood restaurant in Anstruther 24 East Green - KY10
“Entered via a little courtyard”, this former smokehouse has been a famous culinary destination for decades and has been in its current guise under Billy Boyter since 2014. On all accounts, its performance remains very good all-round. It serves a seven-course tasting menu for £85 focused on seasonal Scottish produce and locally foraged ingredients.
3. Drift restaurant in North Berwick Canty Bay - EH39
Overlooking the Firth of Forth, this clifftop coffeehouse overlooking Canty Bay recently took on a new head chef, Lewis Lane, ‘to take the venue in a smarter direction’. In June 2021, Gaby Soutar in The Scotsman, hailed some “impossibly gorgeous-looking” dishes here and a good selection all-round.
4. Chez Roux, Greywalls Hotel British, Modern restaurant in Gullane
“A very classy experience with little or no fault to find”, say fans of the Roux-branded operation at this well-known Lutyens-designed golfing hotel, which looks towards the Firth of Forth, although it again attracted only a limited volume of feedback. Also acclaimed: “a lovely country-house ambience for a perfect afternoon tea, with spot-on service”. (Albert Roux, who passed away in early 2021, had been in charge of managing the cuisine here, but now it’s handled by his son, Michel Roux Jr).
5. The Bonnie Badger Scottish restaurant in Gullane Main Street - EH31
A very sophisticated coastal gastroboozer-with-rooms from Tom & Michaela Kitchin, following their acclaimed Edinburgh restaurant, and featuring a pitched-roof dining room plus extensive gardens. It didn’t inspire a huge volume of feedback this year, but the nature-to-plate cooking is often judged “excellent” (with “all those little touches that lift a good meal to a great one”).
6. Osteria Italian restaurant in North Berwick 71 High Street - EH39
“Far removed from the usual ‘trat’”, Angelo Cocchia’s award-winning Italian (est. 2006) turns out unpretentious ‘nonna-style’ dishes inspired by head chef Daniela's grandma, as well as wines from his own home region. “Friendly” service seals the deal.
