“Not many people visit Anstruther, or Ainster as the locals call it, without visiting this famous institution” – a veteran chippie (est. 2003) run by the Smiths, who were born into the local fishing industry and also run the Argofish processing business. “Be prepared to wait during high season, but it will be worth it, as their fish renderings are second to none (no wonder they win lots of awards)”.

“Fresh and tasty fish” of an extremely high quality is always on the menu at this famous Scottish chippy, taken over 20 years ago by Robert & Alison Smith, whose families have been in the local fishing industry for generations. The couple also run the Argofish processing business, named after the Smith family’s ‘Argonaut’ boats.

“For us, the best fish and chips we’ve ever had, sitting by the ocean!” – this famous and good-value chippy has been owned for almost 20 years by Robert Smith, whose family has been involved with the local fishing industry since the 1700s. Any complaints? “we had to queue a very long time to get our order (but that was because it’s so popular!)”.

Famous for its “top-quality”, “astoundingly cheap” fish – this harbourside chippy has been owned since 2003 by Robert Smith, from a local fishing dynasty that stretches back to the 1700s. He set up supply specialist Argofish in nearby St Monans with his wife Alison in 1980.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
