This two-year-old just twenty yards from the beach at Sandsend serves highly rated fish ’n’ chips plus some more elevated seafood dishes, to eat in or take away (which some reporters reckon is “the best option”). A second branch in York Market makes a “fabulous addition” to the city’s food offering.

On the north end of Whitby Bay, next to a stream that trickles into the ocean, this refined new beach shack turns out “very good fish and chips” from its takeaway hatch; you can also linger longer in the restaurant over fishy small and large plates, plus tacos and loaded fries.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

"When we called this morning they could only offer us dinner at 5pm on a chilly June day, far earlier than we would normally eat but we're glad we accepted the offer. Difficult to generalise from our experience on a first visit but we were really impressed - short menu and one of the three specials sold out at 5.30pm (but they are closed the next two days). My wife's small appetite was delighted with the fishcake starter and trimmings served as a main, and my pan fried stone bass fillet came with superb fresh asparagus and samphire, followed by a rich and unctuous lemon posset. Definitely first choice for our next visit to Whitby.. "
