“Very good fish ’n’ chips” are the star turn at this Whitby fixture which celebrates its 45th anniversary this year, and vies with perennial rival the Magpie half a mile away for bragging rights as ‘Britain’s best chippy’. It opened a spinoff at Whitley Bay’s Spanish City in 2018.

“Watch out Magpie!” is a perennial cry of loyal fans of this Whitby fixture. But even if its more famous rival undoubtedly has won the popular vote, fans say this nearby chippie is “excellent of its kind”.

“Best crab sandwich with chips ever” typifies support for this Whitby fixture, which – though somewhat eclipsed by the renowned Magpie nearby – is, nevertheless, tipped by its fans as “the best chippy in town by far”.

“Close on Maggie’s heels” – this Whitby stalwart (with Whitley Bay spin-off) is extremely “professional” in its approach. “All fish are ethically caught, with the daily supplier shown on a chalkboard along with the variety and source of the potatoes. The restaurant itself is a bit glitzy but very well run and scrupulously clean….all in all, a real find.”

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

"Fish and chips par excellence. Better and easier than the ‘other place’. This is where locals go."
