One of the ‘Remarkable Places to Eat’ chosen by Nadiya Hussain and Fred Sirieix for their TV road trip last year – this seafront café overlooking Saltburn pier on the North Yorkshire coast offers an ideal combination of “great views and fab food”. There’s “excellent fish in shattering batter” and a “good selection of seafood brought in daily from the local fishermen”, plus a deli counter, ice cream parlour and street food area downstairs. Top Tip (from Nadiya and Fred): crab brioche.

“Terrific views over Saltburn pier and the seafront from a first floor banquette” further boost the appeal of “this airy and modern fish ’n’ chip café”, set over two floors and with an outside terrace. “Prices are very reasonable and the food’s great” and “while there’s always a long queue it’s worth the wait”. “A ‘fine dining’ menu was introduced recently giving a lovely contrast to the typical (though very good) chippie fare: all beautifully cooked and presented”.

For 31 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
