“Still the benchmark for seafood… the batter on the fish is beyond crisp, really fresh and moist” at this well-known seaside destination “and you can get to it via the cliff railway for great views out to the ships coming and going to Teesport and the ever increasing offshore windfarms”. A couple of issues present themselves. Firstly, there’s no reservations at lunchtimes (“it is worth queuing for, but is that really necessary?”). Secondly, a couple of diners feel it has become “too big for its boots since being on TV”. Still, even those who feel Nadiya Hussain “overrated this place” themselves still say it’s good.

“You can’t fault this superb restaurant” which is “good for both fish ’n’ chips and fine-dining dishes” – and boasts “great views out to sea, which is fitting as that’s where what’s on the menu comes from”. “Most patrons seem to opt for fish ’n’ chips, which means they’re missing out on some delicious alternatives” – such as the ‘Saltburn crab brioche’.

“Great fish and chips, but also a good number of other locally caught seafood options” are served “all with a lovely view over Saltburn beach and pier” at this well-named local feature. “The crab sandwich that featured in a Nadiya Hussein BBC TV show is good but pricey!”

“The name is quite right… the view of the sea, the pier and the cliffs make it a very calming place to enjoy some really good seafood” and it’s “a great place to while away a summer evening”. “As well as battered fish, there are also more adventurous dishes”“you’d be a fool to miss the crab brioche” – although overall some reporters “would choose fish ’n’ chips over the more ‘restaurant-y’ dishes”. “Only walk-ins, during the day and not easy to book a table in the evening.”

For 34 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
