Featured South Lambeth Restaurants
1. 24 The Oval
British, Modern restaurant in Oval
24 Clapham Road - SW9
In the thin area near Oval tube, this neighbourhood bistro is worth remembering. A sibling to Knife in Clapham, its “old-fashioned modern British cooking” puts a similar emphasis on steak and other grills, but there’s a good selection of dishes and – albeit on limited feedback – it wins praise for “excellent all-round value”.
2. Italo
Italian restaurant in Lambeth
13 Bonnington Square - SW8
2021 Review: “Grab a seat outside either at the counter shelf or at one of the tables” of this eleven-year-old deli “in an off-the-beaten track, verdant garden square in Vauxhall” for an authentic lunchtime treat from a short Italian menu. In colder weather you eat inside at a few closely-packed tables surrounded by shelves of produce.
3. Brunswick House Café
British, Modern restaurant in Vauxhall
30 Wandsworth Rd - SW8
“An architectural salvage display room” lit by chandeliers – in a Georgian mansion fronting the Vauxhall Cross gyratory system – provides a “lively, boho and very relaxed” backdrop for this unusual but successful venue. Amazingly, it “works so well”, with “above average (if expensive) modern British fare” from highly regarded chef Jackson Boxer. (“Well worth the detour/ taking your life in your hands navigating the Vauxhall one way!”).
4. Canton Arms
British, Traditional restaurant in Stockwell
177 South Lambeth Rd - SW8
This “top-notch local boozer” in Stockwell offers arguably the “best pub food in South London” – “simple and hearty fare, but always served with verve and understanding” by on-the-ball service. Its slightly remoter address and a lack of theatres nearby means it is slightly less busy than its famous foodie stablemate, the Anchor & Hope in Waterloo.
5. Chokhi Dhani London
Indian restaurant in Battersea
Unit 2, 2 Riverlight Quay, Nine Elms Lane - SW11
2021 Review: In the “desert” of Vauxhall’s riverside developments, this year-old offshoot of one of India’s best-known luxury restaurant groups occupies the smartly furnished ground floor of one of the new blocks, and specialises in Rajasthani cuisine. Feedback is still relatively limited, but such as there is says it’s been an “excellent arrival”.
6. Dirty Burger
Burgers, etc restaurant in Vauxhall
Arch 54, 6 South Lambeth Road - SW8
2022 Review: This once-thriving burger brand from Nick Jones’s Soho House group has been reduced to a single branch, under the arches in Vauxhall, and a supporting role at stablemate Chicken Shop in St John’s Wood. Fans reckon it’s “good for when you’re in a hurry” – perhaps they should hurry, while it’s still there.
7. Tea House Theatre
Afternoon tea restaurant in Lambeth
139 Vauxhall Walk - SE11
2023 Review: ‘Where there’s tea there’s hope’ is the philosophical underpinning of this “quirky café”, which occupies a converted pub by Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens, and “does amazing breakfasts” and “unusual teas”, plus yummy buns. “They are a tea house though, so there is no coffee available!!”
