Indian Restaurants in Leicester
1. Hambleton Hall British, Modern restaurant in Hambleton
2021 Review: “A perfect country retreat!”. The crunch of gravel on the drive and “beautiful views” set the scene at Tim Hart’s “beautiful” hotel (a fine mansion once owned by the Hoare banking family, and constructed long before Rutland Water which it nowadays overlooks). It offers a “pampering” experience “which makes no compromises to quality” in a very traditional style that’s occasionally thought to be “stiff” but more commonly elicits nothing but rave reviews. Aaron Patterson has overseen the kitchen here since 1992, and his “exceptional classic cuisine” is “beautifully presented with amazing flavours”. It’s not an inexpensive experience, but no-one considers it overpriced: “we rarely feel we can afford it, but it’s always turned out to be a pleasure!” – “a self-indulgent treat that makes one feel good days or even weeks later”.
2. Kayal Indian restaurant in Leicester 153 Granby St - LE1
2021 Review: “Authentic South Asian cooking at its best” – Kayal has blazed a trail for Keralan cuisine in Leicester “with an excellent choice of dosas, fish and vegetarian dishes and a knowledgeable waiter to talk you through the options”. Top Tip: “amazing business lunch for £6”.
3. Tandem Indian restaurant in Leicester 59-59a Highcross Street - LE1
2021 Review: Cyrus Todiwala OBE, the acclaimed Bombay-born TV-chef behind London’s Café Spice Namaste, has chosen a Grade II listed building in the city-centre for his first restaurant outside London; and will feature five separate areas over two floors, including a bar, casual dining and fine dining room. For the town with the biggest Diwali festival outside India, Leicester has always curiously lacked a go-to Indian dining destination – maybe this is it?
4. Bobby’s Indian restaurant in Leicester 154-156 Belgrave Rd - LE4
2021 Review: You “always can depend on excellent vegetarian food” (of a Gujarati bent) at this affordable sweet shop and canteen: a fixture on the Golden Mile since way back in 1976 – though it’s somewhat spruced-up these days, and the menu has taken into account modern healthy-eating trends (sadly the founder, Bhagwanji Lakhani, passed away in 2017).
