Featured Leicester Restaurants
1. Hambleton Hall British, Modern restaurant in Hambleton
“A perfect country retreat!”. The crunch of gravel on the drive and “beautiful views” set the scene at Tim Hart’s “beautiful” hotel (a fine mansion once owned by the Hoare banking family, and constructed long before Rutland Water which it nowadays overlooks). It offers a “pampering” experience “which makes no compromises to quality” in a very traditional style that’s occasionally thought to be “stiff” but more commonly elicits nothing but rave reviews. Aaron Patterson has overseen the kitchen here since 1992, and his “exceptional classic cuisine” is “beautifully presented with amazing flavours”. It’s not an inexpensive experience, but no-one considers it overpriced: “we rarely feel we can afford it, but it’s always turned out to be a pleasure!” – “a self-indulgent treat that makes one feel good days or even weeks later”.
2. John's House British, Modern restaurant in Mountsorrel 139-141 Loughborough Road - LE12
“Everything is first class” at chef John Duffin’s acclaimed venture set on his family’s farm (which provides much of the produce for the menu). His seasonal cuisine (with the option of a seven-course blow-out) delivers a “superb” “taste-sensation” and yet it “does not try too hard”. Staff provide an “immediate warm welcome” and “obviously care about what they do”. Top Tip – “Set lunch is very good value for such top notch food”.
3. The Fish & The Chip British, Modern restaurant in Leicester 13-21 St Nicholas Place - LE1
2018 Review: It’s all change at this swish boutique hotel – a bit of a pioneer when it opened a decade back – with former owner Aatin Anadkat opting to focus solely on the ground-floor restaurant; in August 2017, replacing the fine dining spot of old, he launched this new, more populist Union Jack-strewn concept venue, serving comfort food classics (sausage ’n’ chips, surf ’n’ turf burgers etc.) and, as of yore, superior cocktails.
4. Kayal Indian restaurant in Leicester 153 Granby St - LE1
“Authentic South Asian cooking at its best” – Kayal has blazed a trail for Keralan cuisine in Leicester “with an excellent choice of dosas, fish and vegetarian dishes and a knowledgeable waiter to talk you through the options”. Top Tip: “amazing business lunch for £6”.
5. Tandem Indian restaurant in Leicester 59-59a Highcross Street - LE1
Cyrus Todiwala OBE, the acclaimed Bombay-born TV-chef behind London’s Café Spice Namaste, has chosen a Grade II listed building in the city-centre for his first restaurant outside London; and will feature five separate areas over two floors, including a bar, casual dining and fine dining room. For the town with the biggest Diwali festival outside India, Leicester has always curiously lacked a go-to Indian dining destination – maybe this is it?
6. Bobby’s Indian restaurant in Leicester 154-156 Belgrave Rd - LE4
You “always can depend on excellent vegetarian food” (of a Gujarati bent) at this affordable sweet shop and canteen: a fixture on the Golden Mile since way back in 1976 – though it’s somewhat spruced-up these days, and the menu has taken into account modern healthy-eating trends (sadly the founder, Bhagwanji Lakhani, passed away in 2017).
