* Based on a three course dinner, half a bottle of wine, coffee, cover charge, service and VAT.

This “friendly” neighbourhood spot with a “tasty” modern European menu has done stalwart service in a Swiss Cottage sidestreet for the best part of three decades. “They have a monopoly for convenience to the nearby Hampstead Theatre”, and serve an “efficient and stress-free” pre-theatre spread. The harsh would say the quality of the cooking can be “so so” – if it was a notch higher, this could be quite a destination.

This “friendly neighbourhood restaurant” in Swiss Cottage, now closing in on its 30th anniversary, is “good if not brilliant… probably the best in the area”. OK, you might not cross town for it, but it’s very handy for the Hampstead Theatre, with a “great pre-theatre menu”.

“Convenient for the Hampstead Theatre”, this “off-the-beaten-track” Swiss Cottage stalwart serves a modern British menu of some ambition, and offers “especially good value pre-show menus”. At other times, prices are “a bit steep”, service can lag, and it can seem “curiously unmemorable” even though “objectively the food is good, and the room tastefully restrained”.

For 30 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
