Harden's says

Chef Stuart Ralston of highly rated Aizle opens his new seafood restaurant in October 2023 in the stylish Royal Terrace premises of the late Paul Kitching’s 21212. The 10-course set menu, for just 28 guests per sitting, is billed as 'an ode to produce from the Scottish Isles'.

Our reviews are based on an annual survey of ordinary diners which runs in Spring each year. But this establishment has not yet gathered enough feedback for our editors to write it up.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

"For a start the restaurant is not in Leith but very close to Edinburgh city centre on Royal Terrace. It’s a 10 course tasting menu that description will struggle to do justice. This is top 3 in Scotland. Up there with Andrew Fairlie and Lalique. Possibly better. This is Scottish produce fused with Japanese styling that creates the best flavours possible. The setting is immaculate and befits the price paid for the food - classy and beautiful. The staff are faultless in knowledge and service (Stuart and Jade run a phenomenally professional restaurant). It’s expensive and about to get more expensive so I guess I won’t be a frequent visitor but this is exceptional dining - quality ingredients stunningly combined. I’ll struggle to find this quality and combination anywhere else (except Stuart’s other venue, Aizle. There’s a fishy focus that showcases what Stuart does best. We had more “caviars” than I’d expect to have and lots of truffle. The halibut and langoustine courses were phenomenal. The deserts were beautifully crafted. The matching wines perfect (typically I dont think matching wines are great value, but this is serious matching). Overall this is a restaurant punching up to be the best in Scotland."

"Outstanding new restaurant at the former home of 21212 on the royal Crescent in Edinburgh, highly recommended for the originality of the menu, the relaxed and attentive service, and not forgetting the stunning dishes that celebrate the produce of the Scottish islands, especially seafood."

What the Newspaper Critics are saying

The Times

Chitra Ramaswamy was thrilled by the priciest meal of her reviewing career – £165 for a 14-curse tasting menu – at chef Stuart Ralston’s fourth restaurant, in “one of Edinburgh’s most beautiful Georgian addresses”, an elegant townhouse on Royal Terrace that was previously the late Paul Kitching’s 21212.

Her dinner was “pure decadence (at least three courses too many for this critic)” and “insanely expensive”, but there was no question about the excellence: “it is Ralston’s finest hour”.

A dish of poached langoustine wrapped in kataifi pastry, the shredded filo usually encountered in baklava, with burnt apple ketchup was, Chitra reckoned, “at once the best battered seafood I’ve eaten and like nothing I’ve encountered before”.
