“The freshest of fresh fish, prepared to your taste right in front of your eyes” proves a winning formula for chefs Jay Scrimshaw and Richard Stokes – “to get this range and quality of fish anywhere inland is exceptional to the point of miraculous”. Scattered among the superlatives were reports of some diners’ best meals of the year; and eulogies for a “quirky and slightly hipster” venue whose specialities include “skilfully aged fish”. Top Tips – “sit at the bar” to get the best view of the chefs; “the prawn toast is killer”.

“Fresh fish, expertly aged, prepared and cooked” is the proposition at this two-year-old ‘fish butchery’ from chefs Jay Scrimshaw and Richard Stokes that “goes from strength to strength”. “A triumph!”“it feels just like a great fish (or any) restaurant should be”: “everything is good”, and the prices are pretty reasonable for quality seafood. Top Menu Tip – “the prawn toast deserves a Nobel prize”.

“The superlatives are fully justified” at this yearling from well-travelled chefs Jay Scrimshaw and Richard Stokes, serving “grown-up seafood dishes in a charming setting”. It’s a “simple and informal place but still quite serious”, with “knowledgeable and passionate staff” and “every dish outstanding, in decent-sized portions and at very fair prices”.

“An outstanding newish restaurant in Mill Road” – this restaurant, deli and ‘fish butchery’ opened in mid 2021, further bolstering the ever-more thriving local scene. Fish and seafood is right, left and centre to the offering with an eclectic and inviting mashup of Asian curries, pho, pasta and funky small plates. Earlier in the week is à la carte – weekend evenings are a tasting menu format.

For 35 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

"We came for a saturday lunch to celebrate and it got us in the mood. The cooking was sublime definately something to get excited about. This is the best of seafood and fish cookery taken to the next level, we especially liked the asian flavours running through many of the dishes. You get the feeling the two guys who run this place really care about every detail. Service is friendly and you can sit at the bar and watch the chef theatre take place in front of you. If not, and there were four of us, very comfortable seating and well spaced so a nice relaxing atmosphere to eat. We like the lunch menu as it is al a carte and we shared everything for maximum menu coverage. Nice wine list too. the stars of the show for us were the snacks and starters, to name a few, the prawn toast is umami heaven and has to be tried. the sourdough crumpet with smoked haddock cacio pepe looked a bit of a mess but it delivered on flavour. Brown shrimp croquettes and the seared tuna on a mushroom custard amazing. and not to forget the crab rice and xo sauce with egg yolk, wow!! My new favorite in Cambridge that's for sure. Puds good too. and finally the price pretty reasonable given we went for it, suggest you do too. mains around £35 starters and snacks range from £9 to £22 depending on size and type of seafood. "

"outrageously accomplished fish cooking. Inventive use of herbs and spices that never overpowers underlying high quality of the fish. "

"The very good food was served in a very noisy ‘shop’ which was a little off putting. "
