It’s not much more than a bright blue hut with a covered terrace, but the seafood on offer at this offbeat former oyster farm, set on the Avon estuary, has made it a known stop-off in this part of the world. Since the departure of longtime owner Chris Yandell in 2018, feedback on it has dwindled noticeably, but such as we have says it remains “consistently good”, with added marks for being “dog, child and everything friendly!”
This “quirky and fun” shack in a former oyster farm overlooking the Avon estuary offers a “warm welcome” and, in particular, “eating on a summer’s day under the outside canopies makes for a great lunchtime”. Long-term owner Chris Yandell sold up in early 2018 to develop his Rocktails range of no-alcohol distilled drinks, and while praise remains solid for its “good variety of local fish and seafood”, food ratings slipped a fraction this year (one regular notes: “they have retained much of the style of the ‘old’ Oyster Shack but there was some lack of attention to detail – hopefully temporary teething problems.”)
Albeit an “unassuming” and “basic” sort of place, this “quirky” hilltop eatery is a well-known “hidden gem” where “the shellfish is delicious, including of course the oysters”, which are sourced from beds nearby.
“This hilltop restaurant reached along the river valley justifies its name” – expect “sensational oysters” from the beds nearby, plus “sublime lobsters and shellfish”. The “cheap ’n’ cheerful decor” is “no frills”, but it’s “a fun and friendly venue”, and even the odd reporter who felt it “nothing remarkable in the way of food” conceded that “the setting is worth a detour”.
