Having been born on the same site that hosted an oyster farm over three decades ago, molluscs (with hot or cold toppings) remain central to the joys of this shack – no exaggeration – where you can dine indoors by the fire or at plastic tables and chairs below a makeshift awning. Also on the menu: quality fish, ranging from monkfish to hake and sole.

“Shack is the right word for this ultra-casual restaurant specialising in delicious oysters but also serving freshly caught fish” – one reporter summarises the limitations (but mostly charms) of this former oyster farm, where you can now dine inside by the fire or on the outdoor terrace.

“A lovely spot to eat fantastic fresh Devon seafood, simply served and tasty every time” – this informal operation was originally an oyster farm where guests picnicked beside the Avon estuary. These days there’s a bar, but it’s still pretty basic.

“Fresh seafood, very well cooked” is the raison d’être of this low-key shack with a terrace that grew out of an oyster farm on the Avon estuary more than 30 years ago. Long-time owner Chris Yandell left four years ago, but the venture still ticks most boxes, especially as “a great al fresco summer experience”.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
