Featured Hampstead Restaurants
1. Paradise Hampstead Indian restaurant in Hampstead 49 South End Rd - NW3
“Lovely neighbourhood Indian” near Hampstead Heath that’s deservedly popular for its “tasty food from an interesting menu” and “reasonable prices”. Now run by the second generation of the founder’s family, who provide “exceptionally friendly service”, its only drawback is that it “can be difficult to get a table”.
2. Jin Kichi Japanese restaurant in Hampstead 73 Heath St - NW3
“Outstanding” Japanese cooking (“we dream about it!”) has made this stalwart “izakaya-style” venue one of Hampstead’s best foodie destinations for decades; and it attracts fans from across north London and beyond. “And it’s not all about sushi” – yakitori (“grilled delicacies”) are also a speciality here, and “the hotpots are brilliant too”. “Service is lovely”, and the only drawback is its diminutive size – “so get a reservation if you can”. Top Tip – “sit by the grill upstairs for the treat of watching the chef at work”.
3. 28 Church Row Spanish restaurant in Hampstead 28 Church Row - NW3
A “revelation” – well, by the standards of Hampstead anyhow – this cute basement tapas bar with an open kitchen occupies a cellar space, near the church of St John-at-Hampstead, and has taken the area by storm with its “constantly changing menu, intriguing wine list and very friendly service”. There’s no booking, but they’ll phone you if you wait in the pub opposite.
4. L' Antica Pizzeria Pizza restaurant in Hampstead 66 Heath St - NW3
“A Hampstead institution”, this “small” Neapolitan with a “classic, buzzy-pizzeria ambience” is “the real deal and excellent value” – so it’s “always packed, especially at weekends (when you can’t reserve)”. There’s also a range of appetizers and pasta dishes, and a spin-off branch in New Barnet.
5. The Wells Tavern British, Modern restaurant in Hampstead 30 Well Walk - NW3
“Ultra reliable” cooking “a notch above usual gastropub fare” and “very friendly staff” have long made this handsome, dog-friendly Grade II listed tavern a Hampstead favourite. “The food is far from groundbreaking – but that is part of the classic appeal” – “been going for years and never had a bad meal”. It’s run by Beth Coventry, sister of veteran restaurant critic Fay Maschler (as you’ll know if you read her pieces, as she’s always giving it a plug!).
6. Ginger & White Hampstead Sandwiches, cakes, etc restaurant in Hampstead 4a-5a, Perrins Ct - NW3
Cutely-sited Hampstead café – a chic and highly rated coffee stop (beans care of Square Mile Coffee Roasters) whose all-day breakfasts, toasties and buns are ideal for brunching with beauteous Hampstead types. It no longer has a Belsize Park sibling.
7. Holly Bush British, Traditional restaurant in Hampstead 22 Holly Mount - NW3
This “quaint relic from the 18th century” is a Grade II listed tavern on an attractive Georgian side-street in Hampstead. It serves “a fairly restricted menu” of “unmodernised pub food”, which can fit the bill for a Sunday roast or simple meal, but critics feel the cooking “really ought to be better”.
8. Delicatessen Middle Eastern restaurant in Hampstead 46 Rosslyn Hill - NW3
“Possibly the best of the new kosher restaurants beyond Golders Green” – this Hampstead two-year-old excels (in a barely competitive field, admittedly) with its “interesting”, “modern Middle Eastern dishes” in “huge portions” from ex-Ottolenghi chef Or Golan. Service, by contrast, can seem “a bit amateur”.
9. Villa Bianca Italian restaurant in Hampstead 1 Perrins Ct - NW3
This “very traditional Italian” in a prime Hampstead spot “hasn’t changed much (except the prices)” for the past 30 years. Its enviable location, tucked away off the main drag, explains much of its appeal, as does a “formal but un-snooty” style that’s not to all tastes, but helps attract “lots of buzz (and some celebs!)”. Some fans applaud the fare as “well-cooked in generous portions”, others say it’s merely “fair”.
