“Still the benchmark for seafood… the batter on the fish is beyond crisp, really fresh and moist” at this well-known seaside destination “and you can get to it via the cliff railway for great views out to the ships coming and going to Teesport and the ever increasing offshore windfarms”. A couple of issues present themselves. Firstly, there’s no reservations at lunchtimes (“it is worth queuing for, but is that really necessary?”). Secondly, a couple of diners feel it has become “too big for its boots since being on TV”. Still, even those who feel Nadiya Hussain “overrated this place” themselves still say it’s good.

“Outstanding fresh seafood and great New World wines” are the highlights of this Regency-era restaurant-with-rooms in a village near Whitby – Tim Lawrence “is an excellent fish chef”, while his co-owner David Cross presides over a wine list that “always has something new and interesting”. Each setting in the “calm” and somewhat formal dining room has a black napkin folded into the shape of a dinner jacket.

“The best fish in a lovely place” – this ‘Seafood Restaurant and Fish ’n’ Chip Takeaway’ is right by the beach in a scenic village a short hop from Whitby. “Takeaway is lovely, but eat in for the full menu, wine and the full pleasure of a visit”. In particular it’s a “superb place to eat outdoors”. Top Menu Tip – “fish taco and scampi are top in flavour and mega good value. And Champs by the glass is always welcome”.
