Featured Greenwich Restaurants
1. Craft London British, Modern restaurant in Greenwich Peninsula Square - SE10
“You dine very well” from a “really interesting and different menu”, hosted by “informative staff”, in the restaurant at Stevie Parle’s multi-level operation by the O2 Centre. “The bars are pretty good as well” – “brilliant for cocktails, fantastic for people-watching” – and there’s a café on the ground floor.
2. The Guildford Arms British, Modern restaurant in Greenwich 55 Guildford Grove - SE10
“One of the best in the Greenwich area” – this three-storey Georgian tavern has a “beautiful garden” and “sits away from the main drag, so it’s not overly packed and touristy”. Chef Guy Awford is a well-known name in these parts having cooked at Inside (RIP) for many years, and is credited with some “brilliant cooking” here too. In mid 2019 it closed, to be totally transformed, with re-opening set for September 2019: if they get it half right, this will become Greenwich’s No. 1 destination. (Ratings are based on past performance: not yet post-revamp).
3. Zaibatsu Japanese restaurant in Greenwich 96 Trafalgar Rd - SE10
This “buzzy, family-owned Asian” dishes up “really fresh Japanese fusion food” that’s “cheap and delicious”, including “super-value sushi”. It’s “basic” and “functional”, with “dog-eared menus” and Formica tables, but “service is efficient” and you can BYO.
4. Goddards At Greenwich British, Traditional restaurant in Greenwich 22 King William Walk - SE10
“Crammed with tourists and locals every lunchtime, getting a taste of history”, this “genuine and friendly” Greenwich fixture is one of the last purveyors of traditional pie ’n’ mash left in London. The “pies haven’t changed since 1890” – although they do now offer a veggie version with soya.
5. Sticks'n'Sushi Japanese restaurant in Greenwich 1 Nelson Road - SE10
“Not Japanese nor pretending to be” – this Danish fusion-chain offers a suspicious-sounding-but-successful mix of “fancy sushi” with “plenty of other stuff on skewers” (i.e. yakitori ‘sticks’). “Some of the non-traditional additions don’t quite work, but those that do are lovely”; and as a group, “where so many others fail, it delivers well on consistency”. Its “big and spacious”, Scandi-style branches create a “vibrant and exciting” environment too, “but, oh my word, the prices…”
6. Five Guys O2 Burgers, etc restaurant in Greenwich The O2, Peninsula Square - SE10
“When all you want is an old-school burger”, these US-based arrivals of recent years really “hit the spot” – you can “build your own”, with “tons of accessories”; plus “seriously addictive fries”, “thick milkshakes”, and “more soda flavours than is reasonable”. “The eat-in experience is as depressing as McDonald’s”, though, in fact perhaps more so – “some branches have a strangely gloomy ambience” – but fans feel that “if you don’t mind 1980s-rock, a trip can still be surprisingly fun”.
8. The Old Brewery British, Modern restaurant in Greenwich The Pepys Building, Old Royal Naval College - SE10
9. Bianco43 Pizza restaurant in Greenwich 43 Greenwich Church St - SE10
