Featured Hungerford Restaurants
1. Three Tuns Freehouse
British, Modern restaurant in Great Bedwyn
High St - SN8
2021 Review: “A super pub and family destination, with good food” – James Wilsey’s sizeable operation, with beer garden, has a beautiful rural location and is consistently well-rated.
2. The Vineyard at Stockcross
British, Modern restaurant in Stockcross
“The astonishing wine cellar is the prime raison d’être” of Classic FM founder Sir Peter Michael’s luxurious California-style property, which features many wines made on the Michael family holdings in Sonoma County and Napa Valley. Tom Scade’s cuisine is consistently highly rated, too, however, and was often appreciated in the form of small plates served in an “exceptionally well-appointed outside area created during lockdown, when eating outside was the only option”. With the return of more normal times, the restaurant has returned to its more conventional format (although many of our reporters “hope they continue the outside dining again next year”). There was only one repeat complaint made against this much commented-on destination this year: it’s not cheap…
3. Eliane of Hungerford
International restaurant in Hungerford
24 High Street - RG17
2021 Review: “Really healthy food” (be it gluten-free, veggie, vegan or even more specific – think raw vegan) is the calling card of this bright “cafeteria-style” outfit, which spawned a Sunningdale spin-off in 2017.
4. The Palm
Indian restaurant in Froxfield
Bath Rd - SN8
2021 Review: It might not look like much from the road – an out-of-town bathroom showroom might be on the mark – and the location on the A4 doesn’t help, but brave the underwhelming façade of this outfit and you’ll find a “swanky” restaurant turning out “inventive Indian cuisine”.
5. The Woodspeen
British, Modern restaurant in Newbury
Lambourn Rd - RG20
“Consistently good in everything it does” – this restored seventeenth-century farm and former pub in West Berkshire is nowadays one of the most commented-on restaurants in our annual diners’ survey (there’s also a cookery school) and it’s cited by fans for its “London quality levels outside London” (the deep-pocketed owner is top catering CEO, Alastair Storey). Despite the departure of founding chef John Campbell in 2020, new executive chef Peter Eaton (who has also been on the team since it opened) has maintained level ratings for cuisine that’s “classy without being OTT”. The stylish and airy space (with a distinctive, ribbed-wood roof) opens onto a large terrace that enjoys sweeping views over the local countryside.
6. Renaissant
British, Traditional restaurant in Bagnor
High Street - RG20
Dom Robinson closed his smash-hit pub, The Blackbird, in its charming village location in June 2021, to relaunch it in September 2021 as a restaurant of greater ambition. (Hence the vaguely SciFi name, implying rebirth.) It's high stakes for a chef chasing a Michelin star, as he had one for the previous format, and he will have to win it all over again for the new venture. Let's hope the “very grounded and un-poncy” cuisine we wrote of last time only benefits from the transition.
