Reopened in September 2019 after a period of closure – complete with guest rooms, new kitchen, restaurant extension and game cookery school – this well-known pub won renown for its game cooking under former proprietor Michael Robinson. Nowadays run, with much of the same team, by his ex-wife, Katie Robinson, we would hazard a guess that its new incarnation will continue the good points it had of old, including its well-kept beer and beautiful large garden in summer.

“Surrounded by lovely countryside”, this red-brick boozer with a “proper, old-fashioned bar” and large garden serves excellent game and “if you are a carnivore this should be your destination restaurant”. It’s best-known for venison shot by the owner, foodie TV pioneer Michael Robinson (also of London’s No 1 gastropub, the Harwood Arms) and other dishes rating mention this year included “great côte de boeuf” and “exceptional, gamey roast grouse”.

A “lovely restaurant and pub in the middle of lovely nowhere in West Berkshire” with “cows just over the wall” (yet “very close to the M4”). Owner Mike Robinson – creator of shoot-and-cook DVDs, saviour of London’s acclaimed Harwood Arms – oversees “lots of game options” which will “satisfy your meat urges for a long time”. “Great garden for lunch on a sunny day” (though only a quite limited bar menu is available there).

For 30 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
