“Tasty North African dishes” inspired by owner Tarek Abdeladim’s Algerian background have won a loyal following for this “reasonably priced” two-floor venue; the small plates range from chicken tagines to hummus and cassoulet, while the thing to drink is the Los Moros pale ale, created specifically for the spot by Brew York. The Shambles Market food stall where it all began (before expanding to this permanent home three years on) is also still doing a swift trade, with one reporter this year approving its “very good” falafel and chicken wraps.

Born as a Shambles Market stall in 2015 (the stall is still going strong), Tarik Abdeladim’s venture branched out into this bricks-and-mortar incarnation three years later. It wins praise for “very enjoyable North African food” with “plenty of interesting sharing options” and Brew York’s branded Los Moros pale ale and lager to wash it down. Top Tip – “sit downstairs if you can”.

“North African-inspired deliciousness” wins universal acclaim for the market stall Tarik Abdeladim opened in 2015, and the restaurant that followed three years later in Grape Lane. Much of the produce is sourced from nearby Yorkshire farms, and Brew York has even produced branded Los Moros pale ale and lager to complement the flavours of its food.

“Hidden gems in York”: Tarik Abdekadim’s Shambles market stall (est. 2015) and Grape Lane restaurant (est. 2018) serve his “incredible” North African dishes, featuring the best local produce alongside pickles, preserved lemons, merguez sausages and falafel, all made on site. “Wonderful staff and a fabulous wine list” ensure that “this is an excellent place to enjoy eating again”. Top Tip: “the ZFC is stunning” (Zaatar Fried Chicken, served with preserved lemon mayonnaise).

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
