Near the quayside of this beautiful Devon estuary town, a rustic bistro (“small, but that only adds to its charm”) which makes a “great place for a celebration dinner” based around “wonderful” locally sourced fish and shellfish. As of 2023, Jack Harvey, who learnt his craft alongside Marcus Wareing, is at the pass, having stepped in for former MasterChef: The Professionals finalist James Checkley.

“Fresh fish is the attraction at this small bistro in Topsham village”, situated near the historic quay; the “first-class” cooking from chef Jack Harvey. He trained in London under Marcus Waring for 2 years, is well “deserving of its recent Bib Gourmand”, with particular praise directed at the “good-value” midweek lunch.

This well-known seafood spot was closed for several months last year but reopened in the autumn under new head chef James Checkley, who received a classical training under Michael Caines. He has quite a rep to live up to and so far he seems to be succeeding: fans hail “the best fish restaurant in an area where there are lots of good ones”.

A “charming small restaurant” run by a father-and-son team, where the focus is on classic fish and seafood from the Devon larder; by common consent the results are “superb”, with a fixed-price menu that's “great value” and service that strikes “just the right balance”, too.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

"Difficult to fault. The background music was slightly loud? Totally delicious food, well presented with attentive and friendly service."
