Reopened by Lucy Townsend a decade back – a “lovely old pub” (with ten rooms) delivering “wonderful, delicious seasonal food” that makes the most of the Kent larder, and where the “superb staff and welcome make every meal special” (it’s hotly in demand for romantic getaways). Top Tip – the “particularly good-value set lunch” (three courses £26.95 per person).

In a “beautiful setting on the Test” in prime fly-fishing territory, Lucy Townsend’s decade-old hotel inspires strong feedback as both a romantic destination and a top dining pub. The “British-style food with nods to the Orient” is uniformly well-rated and abetted by “confident and skilled” service (they’re equally “welcoming to dogs, with generous treats included”). “I very rarely, if ever, say this but I couldn’t fault it!” Top Tip – the courtyard is “absolutely perfect for quality outdoor eating”.

“Not just a pub!” – this “gorgeous spot by the Test, with great food and friendly staff” has been smartly run for 10 years by Lucy Townsend, and is “lovely inside, with a cute little courtyard and a very good atmosphere”. Outside, it’s in prime fly-fishing territory that used to be (as the name suggests) a centre for hare-coursing.

This “smart pub in lovely Stockbridge” – on the banks of the River Test in prime fly-fishing territory – serves elevated gastropub fare from chef Phill Bishop. “Hats off to them for coming up with so many innovative ideas during lockdown – the BBQ in the tepee was superb”.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
