Disused desks from the town’s famous boarding school nowadays support drinkers’ pints at this “very atmospheric” old inn near the cathedral – “an exceptional town pub” that’s in recent times become part of the Fuller’s chain. Food has been up and down in the past, but was nothing less than “competent” this year, if perhaps “rather expensive”.
A “very unusual” interior is the highpoint of this ancient pub near the cathedral (nowadays run by Fuller’s), where drinkers sit at disused desks from the town’s posh boys’ boarding school (after whose 14th-century founder it is named). It’s a highly atmospheric haunt, although popularity means it can be “overcrowded, cramped and noisy”. Foodwise “quality has been all over the place” in recent years, but fans say “it’s the best it’s been since the good old days of late”.
“The wonderful pub atmosphere outweighs the variable food” at this classic Victorian inn near the cathedral (nowadays managed by Fullers), where drinkers sit at old desks from the town’s posh boys’ school.
“A good, old pub like it should be!” – this “old-fashioned Victorian hostelry near the cathedral” has a “unique ambience” and it’s “always busy with a great mix of locals and visitors”. “Delicious food” and “sometimes amateur service” complete the picture.
