“A classical set-up with comfy armchairs and a roaring fire, tea served with sandwiches, scones, jam, cream and cakes – this picturesque country house hotel takes us plebs all back to a bygone age” and is very highly recommended for afternoon tea. Feedback on more ambitious fare in its plush dining room was a little more up-and-down this year and relatively limited, coinciding with the departure of highly rated exec chef Andrew Birch after only two years. His replacement, Phil Yeomans, returns after leaving as head chef in 2014.
The dining room of this plush country-house hotel – “a classic five-star” in an 18th-century mansion – serves an “imaginative menu of innovative food, much of it local produce”. Exec chef Andrew Birch, who took over the kitchen in June 2017, is “definitely one to watch”.
“A great summer afternoon cream tea, sitting outside on the patio, overlooking the rolling Hampshire countryside” is “probably the most affordable entry point” for sampling the cuisine of this plush country house hotel. When it comes to a full meal in the restaurant, Olly Rouse’s cooking receives lots of nominations for top gastronomy, but there is also a lot of griping about how “extremely expensive” the experience can become.
Chef Olly Rouse (late of Coworth Park) turns out “excellent” tasting menus and “the heartiest, tastiest breakfast bar none” at this “very comfortable” country house hotel and adjoining cookery school; prices do, however, remain a sticking point.
