“What a find” – this well-established Gallic restaurant has been ably helmed by husband-and-wife team Garth (FOH) and Maranda Jacobs (chef) for over a decade, having been in existence for twice that long under former chef German Marquis. These days in a handier High Street location, it continues to turn out “delightful” and “delicious” cuisine by absolutely all accounts.

“Garth (maître d’) and his wife (Maranda, the chef) run a truly delightful restaurant”, say fans of this long-running French venture, which the duo took over a decade ago from Paris-born chef German Marquis, and recently shepherded from its former setting on the A30 to a handier high street location. By all accounts, Maranda’s cooking is “superb” (prompting “possibly the best meal” one reporter had this year) and service is “excellent” too.

It recently decamped from its longtime (15+ years) setting on the A30 to a “more sophisticated location on the High Street” – but otherwise the formula (“classic French cooking with a South African twist”) “thankfully has not changed much” at this stalwart; “still a nice restaurant to visit after many trips over the years”.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
