Set in a row of Georgian shops, Martin Peacock’s neighbourhood bistro (est. 2010) has become a real beacon for locals and visitors alike (“our trips to Rye are worked round whether we can get a table here”). On the menu, local Romney Marsh lamb or “super-fresh” fish landed a few hundred metres away (including the gurnard which lends its tail to their logo) are cooked in a pleasingly unfussy way, all at “reasonable prices”.

This quaint bistro in a row of Georgian shops has long been of note for its unpretentious, no-nonsense British cookery based on “local and interesting” ingredients sourced from fields, woodlands and waters. The menu may be a little “unchanging” for regulars, but then again they “know they are to be fed well” at this “always consistent” local gem.

This “really lovely small restaurant”, housed in interlinked Georgian shops, has “been excellent for years” owing to its “short, interesting menu” of locally sourced British food (some foraged) and its “charming and efficient service” too.

“Small and perfectly formed”, with a “short, locally sourced and interesting menu, plus a reasonable wine list” – this “lovely little bistro” is “a must for visitors to Rye” and provided a number of reporters with their best meal of the year. Top Tip – “the local Romney Marsh lamb”.

For 34 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
