“Delicious local fish” – (“three fantastic plump Rye Bay scallops to start!”) – is served in “generous portions” at Paul Webbe’s “good-value” outfit. “Just a shame the dining room is rather stark”.

“If you like fish, come here” – chorus the many fans of Paul Webbe’s “reliable” spot, which serves some of “the freshest seafood ever” at “good VFM” prices – such as a “stonking portion of sprats with super-light batter for under a fiver” and “scallops which melt in the mouth”. “Acoustic panels have been fitted to the ceiling to absorb noise” but the setting can still appear a little bare.

“Our favourite restaurant in Rye”, chorus the many fans of Paul Webbe’s “busy” local spot, which is “always reliable” for “great cooking and ingredients (often fresh from Rye harbour)” and “service that feels personal and relaxed”. “The one slight reservation is the ambience, which somewhat places function over comfort” thanks to the “bare interior”.

“Don’t be deceived by this casual restaurant”, set in a listed Edwardian building, and part of Paul Webbe's three-strong local chain (plus cookery school) – there's “always a nice pace” to the service, which ferries forth a menu of local fish and seafood that “never fails to hit the spot” (“their lobster is quite superb, and ridiculously cheap by London standards”).

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
