Summary
“Paul Webbe’s original restaurant is still a pleasure to visit” almost three decades after opening, the farmhouse venue having since spawned a clutch of fish-centric spin-offs alongside a cookery school in Hastings. “Reliably old-fashioned (in the best possible way)”, it combines “superb service and some first-rate cooking” which, as per the name, is focussed on foraging, including “a marvellous set luncheon with a very large choice for each course at a reasonable price in this day and age”. For several reporters this is a place to “go back to on special occasions as the quality is very good”.
Summary
“Paul Webbe’s original restaurant never fails to delight or impress”, and after 27 years is recording truly impressive ratings and accounting for a significant number of best meals of the year from those who visit it. Yes, “the menu these days could perhaps be called ‘old school’,” but its focus on ultra-fresh local produce – including ingredients foraged in the surrounding countryside – has always been ahead of trends, while the cooking is “consistently of a very high standard”, with “plenty of choice at each course” and it’s all delivered with “fantastic service – they remember you every time”. It’s now the flagship of a group with fish specialist venues and a cookery school in Hastings.
Summary
This “pleasantly traditional and old-fashioned restaurant” “has been a favourite for years” – and is these days “serving a more modern style of food” without losing any of its attractions. It was chef-patron Paul Webbe’s first opening more than 25 years ago, and has been followed by his fish specialist venues in Hastings and Rye.
Summary
Paul Webbe’s “well-established rural restaurant” celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, and is a “destination venue well worth travelling to” for its “wide but manageable choice of dishes and exceptionally good-value dining”. Paul also has fish-focused restaurants in Hastings and Rye, but this more land-based venture was his first, and by many accounts, remains his best.
For 34 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

The Wild Mushroom Restaurant Diner Reviews
"Wow! Late Saturday lunch and nothing was off the menu! Country lane location so a designated driver required The tasty canapés a yummy intro Starters generous and prettily plated with a range of options fellow diner would have liked a tapas style, one of each! Mains too veggie accompaniment just right One diner too replete for dessert, so coffee instead was included. Service friendly and staff knew how dishes served so nut sprinkle could be avoided. Great destination for Saturday lunch. "
