An outpost of the famous tearoom chain that’s “great for brunch” as ever (afternoon tea and substantial mains also being on the agenda) and where – once you get past the queues – time itself seems to rewind, coaxed backwards by the “very professional staff”. “Prices have risen a lot” over the years “but this place will always feel like a treat!” – indeed it’s “a Yorkshire legend!” (even if this branch is not the most epic of the chain).

An offshoot of the time-capsule tearoom chain offering (once you get past the queues) genteel service, plus afternoon tea, sandwiches and other things more substantial. Fans claim that it’s “great for brunch with very professional staff”, although it’s perhaps not the pick of the Bettys bunch, and there was the odd caveat this year over rising prices and shrinking portions.

“Sometimes the queues are horrendous, but it is worth the wait (well, perhaps not if it’s raining!)” at this “absolutely dependable and traditional” representative of the legendary Yorkshire tearoom chain. “Service is sometimes a bit slow but that is part of the old world charm. This is NOT Costa Coffee!". Just the job for tea and a bun.

This “long-established traditional Yorkshire tearoom” is part of the legendary five-strong York chain (the sixth and smallest Stonegate branch having fallen victim to recent times). “Just as good as its sister restaurants”, it “can always be recommended for good-quality meals, afternoon tea or just tea and cake in a highly civilised environment” that’s “relaxed and enjoyable” too.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
