“A real gem in the city”, Warren Yeung’s Chinese in the heart of Chinatown – the original home of its famous sibling Yang Sing, run by his cousin Harry – “remains the best” locally thanks to its “superb and authentic” dim sum, plus other “wonderful” Cantonese dishes (and it’s also sparkling after a recent refurb’). (With the ongoing closure of the Yang Sing itself – which shuttered in 2021, and whose website has disappeared – this is now the dynasty’s sole survivor in Chinatown).

Warren Yeung (cousin to Harry of the big Yang Sing) runs this long-serving staple (on the site of the original Yang Sing) which is still a treasured linchpin of Chinatown for some Mancunians and is still consistently well-rated for its Cantonese cuisine and dim sum. This year’s worst comment? “service is patchy at busy times”.

This “reliable old standby” is “a definite cut above a regular Chinese restaurant, with good dim sum” and remains a “solid enough option now that its big brother remains closed” (the original Yang Sing, which opened on this site in 1977, is still closed as of our annual data refresh – see also). It has plenty of devotees – “we’ve been coming here for over 20 years” – but there are some who grumble that it’s “now very expensive and generally devoid of Chinese custom”. Top Tip… “the ‘C’weeds’ special dim sum platter is still a highlight”.

“The excellent food is the thing here” at this “bustling” Cantonese basement that has been a cornerstone of Manchester’s Chinatown for four decades and counting (it was the original site of the main Yang Sing). “We’ve been going to this restaurant for many years, and it’s still as good as ever – a joy to go for lunch or dinner”. Top Tip: “the dim sum” – full menu served until 5pm; restricted menu later.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
