September 2018: The Oystermen has has been so successful that it's already expanding: they have bought the space next door! The restaurant will close for a short while soon, re-opening on October 22 with 50 covers, a walk-in only raw bar and a bigger open kitchen.
Harden's survey result
“You’ll expect to look out the window at the beach and waves… yet it’s Covent Garden out there!”. This “fun and casual” two-year-old perhaps “feels different since they grew” (into the next door premises) in the autumn of 2018. “But you still eat cheek-by-jowl with neighbouring tables” in a “hustling-and-bustling” setting, and most reports still feel it’s “just as good in its expanded space”. Amongst the selection of “cracking” fish and seafood, “the oysters are a joy”, “the crab’s a wow”; and it’s all “amazing value”. “Likeable staff”, too.
“A jewel of a find” – this “tiny”, “cupboard-sized” yearling in Covent Garden receives a resounding “bravo!” from reporters for its “fun” style, “charming service” and “fabulous” seafood (“oysters are the speciality, but there’s a good range of other fish dishes”). Top Tip: ‘Bubbles ’n’ Oysters Happy Hour – “I called in after reading a review in Harden’s newsletter, and was amazed at the quality of the oysters with a glass of bubbly for £10!” STOP PRESS: just as we went to press, the Oystermen expanded into the space next door, giving them 50 covers, a walk-in-only raw bar and a bigger open kitchen.
A June 2017 opening from former pop-up caterers, The Oystermen; their new, simple, tightly packed Covent Garden home features shellfish and seafood, fresh from the boats, or pickled, smoked and cured by the owners Matt Lovell and Rob Hampton. Top Tip – ‘Bubbles ’n’ Oysters Happy Hour’ (3pm-5pm every day; six oysters and a glass of fizz for £10).
The Oystermen Seafood Kitchen & Bar Restaurant Diner Reviews
"Not a glamorous interior but the food was excellent. The bill was quite high but fish is expensive."
"our first visit and we were delighted with the food. The menu is a bit limited which may mean our return is delayed - we do not eat oysters! That said, there are other fresh well cooked fish options to enjoy and we did! Decent deserts too. Price is middling - no lunch menu seen - and it is quite cramped (kitchen is tiny) but not too noisy."
