A Mecca for “ice cream concoctions” (Fortnums claim to have introduced the Knickerbocker Glory to the UK in the Fifties) – this “lively” spot on the first floor of the venerable Piccadilly grocery is “a child’s paradise” – where “everyone who has a creative sundae receives a badge to wear on future visits, when all the toppings are free”. It’s an “enjoyable place to eat even if you don’t want ice cream”, serving an “excellent full tea with sandwiches and cakes” or “rarebits and other savouries for those who just want a snack”.

“I love the idea of an ice cream parlour at F&M!” say most reporters who visit this “attractively decorated room with views of Piccadilly” on the first floor of this venerable grocer’s shop (whose Royal Warrant was renewed by King Charles following the death of his late mother). For most reporters it’s “just a total joy of nostalgic indulgence and great fun”: “excellent for children who love ice cream and who can create their dream concoctions; and with very good Welsh rarebit for the adults”. A small minority of reports are more sniffy (“a tacky experience, compounded by a huge bill!”).

For 34 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
