“Freshest seafood”“buzzy vibe”“excellent staff”“fabulous location and decor” (inherited from an Edwardian butchers, est. 1911) – “you can’t possibly go wrong” at this Soho landmark, converted nowadays into a “fun” Champagne and seafood bar. “Not a place for a peaceful dinner but then not everyone has a glitter ball. Despite all they’ve been through in the last 18 months, staff are still welcoming and cheerful” – while “the new outside tables are a bonus”. Top Tip: “go for the specials, you’ll never be disappointed”.

“No-fuss”, “fresh seafood done really well” combines with a “fun” and “buzzy” (“riotous” even!) ambience, at this Soho landmark – formerly a butcher (est 1911) that morphed into a restaurant 25 years ago. “It’s still excellent after all these years, like meeting an old friend – we love it”. “Go for the specials, they’re always worth trying”.

“So long as you don’t mind sharing a table with strangers” – this “always-fun” Soho “institution” makes a perfect way to punctuate an evening. With its “great buzz and very nice vibe, it’s always full of energy”, and “warm and friendly” staff deliver “outstanding fresh seafood, especially the big plateaux de fruits de mer”, plus “sumptuous natives, fish ’n’ chips, fish soup and lobster po’boy, all of ’em delicious”.

For 31 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

"Rescued us completed after previous Sunday lunch disaster. Staff were welcoming and seem to have time to stop and chat, despite being so busy. Usually buzzy vibe, beef perfectly cooked and chicken tender. Given that it is primarily a seafood restaurant to produce such good meat lunch fair is excellent. Well done."
