Richard Caring continues to pimp the Ivy brand to the max: since this Asian-themed sub-brand first debuted in Manchester in 2018, it has expanded with a 200-seat venue in the City’s One New Change mall (“great view of St Paul’s”) and – in August 2021 – a second branch opened in SW3 near The Ivy, Chelsea Garden; (and there’s a third coming soon on the Mayfair site that was once Princess Garden). True to Caring’s restaurant DNA, the decor in all locations is wildly maximalist, with fluorescent onyx floors, replica samurai armour and (cringey?) pagoda-style roofs over the bars. Some reporters do find the effect “very cool, in a see-and-be-seen kind of way”. To say the least, though, the Asian-theme-park styling doesn’t send the message that authenticity is on the agenda – a concern which the Chelsea branch’s risibly off-message launch video did nothing to allay (‘naive… totally inappropriate and culturally insensitive’… and that was just what they said about it themselves!). As to the sushi and wide menu of other Asian-inspired scoff: some diners find it “surprisingly good” but, all things considered, it’s kinda beside the point.
For 31 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

The Ivy Asia Guildford Restaurant Diner Reviews
"?The Ivy Asia in Guildford has the enviable position of being a restaurant you cannot avoid given its brand and the lack of other decent options locally . My wife and I went for dinner last night with another couple who are great friends of ours. Food was very good - like you would eat in a London version of the same brand but perhaps as a result of lack of available talent the service was at best questionable. For 4 of us to have a very chunky bill per head after an evening of eating and drinking we would expect it to have been significantly better. The service at the bar before dinner was very good however. Our waiter was clearly not used to serving in a higher end environment - he was very smiley, polite and courteous but his lack of what can only be put down to never having eaten in such a restaurant himself, meant that his over eager random checking if everything was ok and if we needed anything simply became annoying, given he spent most of his time fawning over two girls having dinner together on the table next to us and as a result not noticing us when we did want his attention. Perhaps it would have not been so bad if someone had taken the time to train him to bring more than one wine glass when a bottle is ordered , that red wine rarely is put into an ice bucket( he even defended this by saying “sorry I was told ALL wine and champagne should always be put in a wine bucket ?!l”) and that if we ask for a clean plate because plates had not been cleared from the first courses , we don’t expect to have to ask more than once and wait 10 Minutes to do so ! If we had been in Pizza Express this would have not been an issue but we had been led to believe by the brand and prices that this was going to be something rather different . On top of this we were not told that last food orders were at 11pm so when we ordered more food at 11.20pm we were told the kitchen was closed ?! Really ???? The manager seemed to take over later in the evening - she was manager of our over friendly waiter and to her credit advised perhaps we did not want to buy a full bottle of desert wine, rather order by the glass which was appreciated , but incredibly found it beyond herself to crack any kind of smile ?! She was very blunt in her manner , with body language which did everything she could to suggest we had overstayed our welcome and the idea of us ordering a coffee was clearly a preposterous suggestion !! The 4 of us had a lovely evening but if you are going to charge London prices and have people coming back , there needs to be massively monumental step up in the service. I imagine we will go back but the stampede to get a table since this new venue opened in Guildford feels overhyped and misplaced !"
