“We love the Rockfish chain” – and “Exmouth is our favourite”, say fans of Mitch Tonks’s West Country seafood group, which had eight branches as we went to press, with two more (Salcombe and Topsham) about to open, along with an online seafood market and a pioneering canned-fish operation. Despite being a multiple, it offers “top seafood, and the staff seem really passionate about the subject”.

The newest link in Mitch Tonks’s now seven-strong West Country chain is a good-humoured fish spot right on the mouth of the Exe estuary – and boasting a deck even closer to the action; “great fish ’n’ chips with free chip refills” are part of the winning ticket.

You’ll find a “nice seaside vibe” and “great fresh fish” at this “fun seafood restaurant on the mouth of the Exe” – the newest in the West Country group from Mitch Tonks. It has a “buzzy cool atmosphere I can’t ever remember from the Exmouth of my childhood”.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

"Virtually on the water with glorious sea views. The fish is local, fresh and properly cooked i.e. simply! Service enthusiastically guides you to the seasonal seafood on offer that day. The result is a perfect fish lovers restaurant, sadly a rarity in this island of ours. Why, I ask myself, when we are surrounded by pristine seas abundant with such wonderful wild food do we seem to prefer processed burgers and pizza? Makes no sense unlike this wonderful place! "

Seafood restaurant with appropriate setting...

"Seafood restaurant with appropriate setting, right on the water. The view is out to sea and the Warren, a nature conservation sand spit with no buildings. They serve simple fish and shellfish dishes, largely sourced locally. My fish and chips featured sustainable hake from Brixham. Nothing fancy, just freshest local seafood cooked properly. The service is friendly and enthusiastic. Ask for a window table to soak up the marine atmosphere while consuming the freshest seafood and a chilled glass of white wine from a decent list. As good as it gets!"
