James Martin is the latest in the line of c’leb chefs to have his name over the door of the barrel-vaulted dining room of this historic Tudor coaching inn (which accommodated both Charles I and Oliver Cromwell at different times during the Civil War). Iconic Luxury Hotels Group (who run Cliveden and Chewton Glen) have managed the property for some time, and pre-rebrand the feedback continued the downbeat tenor – “such a disappointment…”, “trading on its name and reputation” – of recent decades. Here’s hoping James can bring some of the magic here that’s created in Chewton Glen and that this fine space finally starts to live up to its potential.

It seems wrong to exclude this famous Tudor coaching inn (which accommodated both Charles I and Oliver Cromwell in different phases of the Civil War) although it inspired no feedback in our annual diners’ poll this year. Nowadays run by the ‘Iconic’ Luxury Hotels Group (who run Cliveden and Chewton Glen), its magnificent barrel-vaulted dining room currently serves rather incongruously as a ‘Bar & Grill’, with steaks, burgers or the likes of butternut squash salad the orders of the day.

With its shades of past glory as a Tudor coaching inn, this famous Cotswolds institution (which accommodated both Charles I and Oliver Cromwell in different phases of the Civil War) has struggled in recent decades to revitalise its renown as a major destination. Sold by the Savoy Group a few years ago into the Cliveden and Chewton Glen stable, it attracts a reasonable number of mostly complimentary reports for its potentially “stunning” barrel-vaulted dining room. Its ‘bar and grill’ branding can seem incongruous, though, and efforts generally a bit “middle-of-the-road” amid all the potential grandeur.

It’s “always a delight to eat in the beautiful dining room” of this famous Cotswolds institution, a Tudor coaching inn where both Charles I and Oliver Cromwell stayed during the Civil War. Now in the same stable as Cliveden and Chewton Glen, its owners clearly plan to rebuild its place on the map as a luxury country hotel (after some years in the wilderness after it was sold out of the Savoy Group). Historically this barrel-vaulted chamber has attracted celeb chefs such as Gary Rhodes back in the day: now the style is ‘Bar & Grill’ – results seem “fine but nothing outstanding”.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

"Highly disappointed. We expected something roughly fine dining but this brasserie at best has mostly shoddy service (with 1 exception) and average food for fine dining prices. We ordered drinks at the hotel bar and asked for nibbles - £6 when the bill came. The cost of the very average food and expensive wine was £110 a head. I know there is inflation but this is ridiculous. "
