It’s “unexpected for a local, suburban boozer sitting next to a school”, but “Brighton’s seafood gastropub” marches to the beat of its own drum, turning out “exceptional” dishes (“emphasis on shellfish”) plus craft beer “brewed in the premises” downstairs, “which adds to the fun”. Taking into account the “upscale” setting, too, you’ve got all “the ingredients for a Perfect Sunday!” (when the idiosyncratic venue pays tribute to paella).

“A shellfish gastropub? Yes, exactly” – the winning formula at this much commented-on corner boozer with a “quirky dining area”. By all accounts the grub is “fabulous” (“simply and expertly cooked”) and “the homebrewed beer adds an additional dimension which makes it really good to visit”.

“Great seafood at reasonable prices”, washed down by craft beer brewed on site, makes this corner venue one of Brighton’s best-known pubs. “Perhaps the menu could change more frequently, but what the Urchin does, it does very well”: “mainly shellfish” , some of it “wonderfully spicy”. Top Menu Tip – “the mussels are delicious”.

A pub “for lovers of fruits de mer”, washed down with Larrikin craft beers from the on-site brewery. There’s “a short menu which could change a little more, but simple pub grub this ain’t” – and the “excellent seafood is so so delicious”.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
