Harden's says
In May 2021, Riddle & Finns on the Beach reopened in a new site, near its former one. Its former site (under the same ownership) is now Due South (which is what it was called before it became Riddle & Finns).
Harden's survey result
Summary
“Perched above the sand in a great beach view setting, the location is uplifting” (“whether in sunshine or driving rain”) at this very popular, restored late-Victorian Rotunda on the promenade – sibling to the Lanes bar of the same name and often praised for its “good, fresh seafood”. Maybe unsurprisingly for somewhere in the touristy heart of the city there are caveats – “the layout inside, perched on stools” can seem constraining (“only customers next to the windows can fully appreciate the seaside”); staff are “cheery” but can “struggle to answer basic questions”; and the food is “a little expensive”… “straightforward rather than outstanding”. Top Menu Tips – “Amazing fresh Sea Bream, delightful monkfish tempura and the pudding platter is the one to go for. Decent Oyster selection too”.
Summary
“A perfect bustling location for a summer’s evening with large shared high tables and delicious fresh seafood” – this restored late-Victorian Rotunda on the promenade is a spin-off from the Lanes bar of the same name and is often recommended for its “great seafood and lovely beach-view setting”. On the downside, service can be “a let-down” and not everyone loves the “counter-type tables where you can only sit side by side”. Top Menu Tip – “amazing fresh sea bream, delightful monkfish tempura and the pudding platter is the one to go for. Very fresh oyster selection and creative veg offering”.
Summary
This “very professional brasserie-style” operation has moved to a “stand-out location surveying Brighton Beach” – the restored late-Victorian Rotunda on the Promenade – and serves a “large and delicious choice” of “classic seafood dishes”. It’s a successful spin-off from the long-established Lanes oyster bar of the same name. Top Tip – “smoked haddock and tempura tiger prawns hit all the right notes”.
Summary
“A palpable hit” – “now in its new home with glorious sea views”, this “buzzy” spin-off from a well-established Lanes oyster bar (relocated to this new site in 2021) “continues to set the standard for seafood”, while “staff add a warm and professional vibe”. Top Menu Tip – “Malaysian crab and any of the mussel dishes are highlights”.
For 34 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
