“Excellent vegetarian food, made with love and imagination” has earned widespread recognition for this institution on a “slightly cramped” corner in the Lanes, founded in 1981. Its younger sibling, Botanique in Hove, was founded on similar lines, but last year took a different direction by adopting a ‘sustainable, biodiverse, hyper-local approach’ that involves serving some meat and fish.

This Lanes institution of almost 45 years’ standing has a national reputation for its “creative” vegetarian and vegan cooking, which is both “good quality” and “very good value for money”. There’s a “wide choice of dishes” inspired by European and Asian cuisines – and a dessert menu that pulls no punches. These days it has an offshoot in Hove, Botanique.

“Highly recommended by locals”, this Lanes veteran of more than 40 years serves up “gorgeous, colourful veggie food” in a “glam and romantic” environment. Juggling “exotic flavours” from various Mediterranean and Asian cuisines, the kitchen sends out dishes that are “great, even for carnivores”. Its younger sibling, Botanique, offers similar options in nearby Hove.

“Lovely tasty veggie” cooking has drawn plaudits for this Lanes veteran for more than 40 years, which these days takes inspiration from global cuisines, including Chinese, Sicilian, Sri Lankan and Vietnamese. Botanique, its younger sibling, is in nearby Hove. Top Menu Tip – “I hope the sweetcorn is on the menu forever”.

For 34 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
