This “busy” high performer on the Brummie dining scene “goes from strength to strength” under head chef Tom Wells, maintaining its rating after the departure of founder Jamie Desogus. Guests can sit at tables or at a counter overlooking the open kitchen, and the tasting menu “offers excellent cooking using seasonal, high-quality ingredients”“a mixture of old favourite signature dishes and dishes new to repeat diners”. A ‘5 for £55’ set meal on weeknights and a ‘Chosen’ reduced tasting menu are also available.

This “absolute jewel of a place” in Harborne, two miles from Birmingham city centre, is hailed by fans for its “outstanding food and divine tasting menus”, while “the unusual wine pairings work really well”“how it doesn’t have a Michelin star is beyond us all!”. Midlands-born chef-patron Jamie Desogus (formerly of Gordon Ramsay’s Pétrus) opened the venue in 2016, and has not faltered since. Top Tip – the reduced five-course weeknight menu offers “exceptionally good value”.

This cleverly converted and relaxed former butcher’s shop showcases a range of “exceptional” tasting menus from Kidderminster-born chef-patron Jamie Desogus, who worked at Gordon Ramsay’s Pétrus before returning to the Midlands in 2016. Not a huge volume of feedback this year, but ratings remain strong across the board.

“The tasting menu is superb!” at Jamie Desogus’s accomplished five-year-old. It’s a characterful space in a former butcher’s shop converted in 2016. Early in the week and at lunchtime, there’s a shorter menu alternative, but on Friday and Saturday evenings only the full tasting menu.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
