1. Restaurant Martin Wishart
French restaurant in Edinburgh
54 The Shore - EH6
Not every fine dining restaurant is a “favourite” of those who nominate it, but Martin Wishart’s low key but supremely accomplished HQ, with its “great location by the water of Leith” is one of them. A London-based reporter notes: “for a special occasion, this has been my go-to for some years, with exceptional service and very interesting, beautifully presented food” from a kitchen that’s “one of the finest in the UK”. It’s the absence of flash and the focus on flavour that seems to appeal and a sense of “feeling valued and welcomed”. In the evening there’s a ‘Market Menu’ at a competitive £95 per person, or the six-course tasting menu is £145 per person.
2. The Peat Inn
British, Modern restaurant in Cupar
“The Smeddle Family has consistently turned out very good food served by very knowledgeable and capable waiting staff” (all backed up by a heavyweight wine list) at this famous, upscale inn – sensitively modernised over the years and set “in a tiny village just outside St Andrews”. One reporter gives us the local lowdown: “As it happens the family have just announced that the business is up for sale. (March 2025). They have run it for twenty years and took it to one Michelin Star. Before them the legendary David Wilson ran it for thirty five years. Watch this space for details of the new owner…” [no transaction has yet been announced as of October 2025]
3. Room With A View
Fish & seafood restaurant in Aberdour
Hawkcraig Point - KY3
2023 Review: “A seafood restaurant that never fails to please, with constantly changing menus that reflect what is available seasonally”. That’s the take on this small (24 covers) family-run fish restaurant and ‘seasonal hotel’ which sits on Hawkcraig point, with views of Edinburgh and the islands of the Forth. “The owners really do pull out all the stops to give a nice dining experience. Great for that special occasion!”
4. Kinneuchar Inn
Scottish restaurant in Kilconquhar
9-11 Main Street - KY9
“Fabulous” and “innovative modern cuisine” have earned an outstanding reputation for this “welcoming and unpretentious” village inn from chef James Ferguson and front of house Alethea Palmer, who worked together at London’s Rochelle Canteen. One reporter hailed it as their “current favourite Scottish restaurant”, while Chitra Ramaswamy of The Times, in her January 2025 rave review, was brought “close to tears” by warm madeleines at the end of a “peerless” meal. Top Menu Tip – “the flatbreads, humble as they may be, are outstanding with a warm garlicky bean purée”.
5. The Harbour Cafe
Fish & seafood restaurant in Elie
The Toft, Elie Harbour - KY9
2022 Review: “Fresh-as-you-like seafood, cooked perfectly with stunning views over Elie Bay – what more could you want?” – that’s the deal at this terrific shack “right on the harbour with a view of the glorious beach” run by Amy Elles of Great British Menu fame. Closed in winter.
6. Craig Millar @ 16 West End
Fish & seafood restaurant in St Monans
16 West End - KY10
2023 Review: “A lovely local restaurant with a high level of cookery” – Craig Millar’s bright coastal dining room provides “a good choice, especially fish at reasonable prices, plus beautiful sea views”. He follows a tasting menu format, offering 5-course and 6-course options.
7. Fishmarket
Fish & chips restaurant in Edinburgh
23a Pier Place - EH6
It’s “worth a ride on the tram” (to the terminus of the Edinburgh line, which is a short walk away) to get to this dockside outfit in a Victorian building, which was launched in 2018 by fancy seafood haunt Ondine, of the nearby capital, and Welch Fishmongers, who supply it. It’s a “very busy” place with “limited tables” in the tiled dining room and on the outdoor terrace: one diner for whom “the takeaway was the only possibility” reports that “it was worth the long queue” for the “excellent fish and chips” (as against the fancier fare in the dining room) even in the winter chill.
8. Fishers Leith
Fish & seafood restaurant in Edinburgh
1 The Shore - EH6
A Leith institution, set in a 17th-century watchtower (and with an offshoot in the city centre) – this stalwart venue “has been around for years, and it’s superb”, with “great fresh fish simply cooked but served with style and gusto” (for instance, “enjoyable crab burger”) – “a go-to for business lunches (always open, always reliable)”. Top Menu Tip – “try the queenie scallops; they’re stunning”.
9. The Kitchin
Scottish restaurant in Edinburgh
78 Commercial Street - EH6
“Always a must-do when visiting Edinburgh” applaud the many fans of Tom & Michaela Kitchin’s converted warehouse in Leith, which – impressively for a twenty-year-old destination – was the most commented-on restaurant in the Scottish Capital in our annual diners’ poll this year. On occasion, “Tom Kitchen is there and comes out to greet new diners” and a visit is “consistently a treat” down to its “attentive service despite the fully booked restaurant” and “excellent-value-for-money, Michelin-starred food”. That said, its ratings have been higher – they were dragged down this year by a minority who found the experience “overpriced”: the three-course à la carte menu is £130 per person, or there is a ‘Surprise Tasting Menu’ for £165 per person. (Cheapskates go at lunch for three courses for £69 per person). Top Tip – “The menu around game season is unbeatable”.
10. Rufflets
Scottish restaurant in St Andrews
Strathkinness Low Road - KY16
2022 Review: Just shy of its centenary, and hard at work sprucing up its gardens (designed by the creator of Balmoral’s gardens no less) – an “elegant” country house hotel whose “airy restaurant” combines “super, fresh, beautifully cooked and presented food with professional and friendly service”. The kitchen garden is at the heart of the operation, and there are further dining spaces outdoors.
11. Barry Fish
restaurant in Edinburgh
62 Shore - EH6
Overlooking Leith Water, a spring 2025 launch from experienced Edinburgh events chef Barry Bryson. There are meat and vegetarian options for fish-phobes, but the focus of the open kitchen is fresh, high-quality local seafood. No reports as yet in our annual diners’ poll, but in her May 2025 review The Times’s Chitra Ramaswamy cheered the arrival of a “vibey” new venue in “Edinburgh’s coolest neighbourhood”: “exactly the sort of hip, unpretentious mid-range restaurant you expect to find on The Shore but up until now never have. Scotland’s top foodie destination has the seafood restaurant it deserves. What a triumph”. Reports please!
