This fifteenth-century coaching inn, timber-framed without and beamed within, is many people’s idea of “the perfect pub” – with “gorgeous food, but still a place where you can enjoy a pint and a laugh with your mates”. Under the same family ownership for more than 80 years, it has expanded into neighbouring buildings to povide accommodation and a modern cocktail bar, The Ostlers.

A “spectacular molecular gastronomic seven-course tasting menu” from chef Stephen Gomes – complete with impressive dessert course – is the centrepiece of this “unique venue” in the leafy burbs (which also has a very eclectic à la carte offering). As an alternative, head to the adjoining shisha lounge, complete with regular DJs – “a great place for romancing Essex girls and boys, with tans, tits and tattoos aplenty!” Note, it’s an alcohol-free venue, with plenty of non-alcoholic drinks, but you can arrange to BYO. Some upbeat feedback, but too few reports for a rating as yet. But, in the right mood, it looks like an interesting night!
