Featured Highbury Restaurants
1. Farang Thai restaurant in Highbury 72 Highbury Park - N5
2021 Review: “Miles more interesting than most Thais” – with food “so hot it makes your eyes water… but in a very good way” – Sebby Holmes’s now-permanent Highbury venture (on the old site of San Daniele, RIP) is earning prominence amongst London’s new-wave Thais. “Favourable comparisons are made with Som Saa, Kiln and Smoking Goat”, approving “zero compromise in the spicing on a short, season-dependent menu”.
2. La Fromagerie International restaurant in 30 Highbury Park - N5
2021 Review: A “mouthwatering array of wonderful cheeses” – they stock from the UK, Ireland, France and Italy – is the most obvious reason to pay a visit to these cafés-cum-cheese shops. But they also serve excellent snacks and meals throughout the day, making the most of “fresh seasonal ingredients”.
3. Il Guscio Italian restaurant in Highbury 231 Blackstock Road - N5
2021 Review: This “great little Sardinian restaurant” in Highbury serves up “excellent food (large amounts of it), in a very convivial atmosphere”. It’s “the perfect local for when we can’t face cooking, or want a midweek treat, or are meeting friends, or want a quick pre-dinner drink... in fact, it’s good on pretty much any occasion”. Kids are welcome, and will love the “amazing pizzas”.
4. Top Cuvee British, Modern restaurant in Islington 177b Blackstock Road - N5
2021 Review: “A brilliant addition to Norf Landon”: this “buzzy” and “notably hip” new Highgate wine bar and bistro offers a fashionable formula, combining a curt menu of “lovely small plates” – showing “real depth of flavour” – with an “excellent wine list, which may tend a tad to the ‘natural’, but which offers plenty of choice”. “Knowledgeable and enthusiastic staff” add to the picture. “Only slight issue is acoustics: this is a hard-walled box, so noise-sensitive folk may want to pass… but I’m looking forward to returning soon”.
5. Primeur International restaurant in Stoke Newington 116 Petherton Rd - N5
2021 Review: A 1920s former car garage provides an “unusual” setting for this Stoke Newington fringe haunt, whose “look and feel (with most people at communal tables, or on counters with stools) works well”, despite it being “crammed” and with “a high noise-level”. There’s quite a “traditional”, ‘bistronomy-style’ menu, from which everything’s “well-cooked”, and there’s an “interesting” list of wines (low intervention, naturellement).
6. Fink’s Salt and Sweet Sandwiches, cakes, etc restaurant in Hackney 70 Mountgrove Road - N5
2021 Review: On a Highbury street corner, this coffee shop/deli is the kind of place locals “love to just drop into, providing there’s a free table”. “The menu’s varied, whether you’re veering towards breakfast or the lunch end of brunch, the coffee’s excellent… and I recently discovered how great their evening food is, too”.
7. Westerns Laundry British, Modern restaurant in Holloway 34 Drayton Park - N5
2021 Review: “Innovative food” in a “hard and echoey” space still packs in the crowds at this hipster hit of a couple of years ago, just off the Holloway Road, which fans feel has a “great vibe” (even despite the fact that “when the place is full, conversation can be close to impossible”). The venue has always had its detractors, though, and there were more vocal complaints this year that the whole approach is “a little too cool for its own good” (i.e. “pleased with itself” and “disappearing up its own fundament”); which results in food that’s “not bad but underwhelming, so hard to see what all the fuss is about”. Also the natural wine list, “while pleasingly ambitious and different, has a high percentage of misses” (to the extent it can seem “plain daft”).
