Featured Highbury Restaurants
1. Farang Thai restaurant in Highbury 72 Highbury Park - N5
“Thai food with wonderful spicing” – “truly authentic flavours” – “is not to be missed” at this new-wave Southeast Asian pop-up-turned-permanent in Highbury. Seb Holmes has developed the project from a market stall to some prominence in five years, and now serves only a nine-course tasting menu in the “lovely light and spacious environment” of the former San Daniele (RIP). “The takeaway versions worked really well during lockdown, too”. Top Tip: “the not-to-be-missed roti bread”.
2. La Fromagerie International restaurant in 30 Highbury Park - N5
You can book any time for the cafés at the Bloomsbury store and for certain sittings in Marylebone if you visit these well-known cheese emporia. Obviously the cheese is an attraction in itself, but there are other high-quality options.
3. Frank's Canteen British, Modern restaurant in HIghbury 86 Highbury Park - N5
Originally a catering company, Frank’s Canteen has been a Highbury fixture since 2014 and has progressed from weekend-only brunches to supper clubs, and – from late 2019 – to serving simple weeknight dinners (dishes such as hispi cabbage with cashew cheese). It reopened with a few outside tables in April 2021, and opening times look set to grow again over time. Limited initial feedback, but all positive.
4. Il Guscio Italian restaurant in Highbury 231 Blackstock Road - N5
“Delighted to see this has survived the pandemic!” – this little Sardinian local, not far from the Arsenal ground, delights its Highbury fanclub. They say it serves “Islington’s top pizza”.
5. Top Cuvee British, Modern restaurant in Islington 177b Blackstock Road - N5
This “buzzy” Highbury wine bar specialises in hip low-intervention wines, backed up by “great food and service”. The menu is predominantly small-plate bites to accompany the interesting bottles being quaffed, so “they could do with more main course options – but the atmosphere is fantastic”.
6. Primeur International restaurant in Stoke Newington 116 Petherton Rd - N5
High quality ‘bistronomy’ wins praise for this communal-table and low-intervention-wine venue, set inside a 1920s car garage between Highbury and Stoke Newington. “I love the fact that the menu is small and things occasionally run out towards the end of the night” – a clear indication that the produce is fresh and not stored for long.
7. Fink’s Salt and Sweet Sandwiches, cakes, etc restaurant in Hackney 70 Mountgrove Road - N5
“A lovely local coffee shop” in Highbury – this four-year-old majors on “tasty fresh bread/pastries and delicious coffee” and “also sells a nice range of deli bits/wines etc”. The same team have opened a second site on nearby Gillespie Road.
8. Westerns Laundry British, Modern restaurant in Holloway 34 Drayton Park - N5
A hipster hit of recent years, Jeremie Cometto-Lingenheim and David Gingell’s “lively”, hard-surfaced operation off the Holloway Road has built a strong following for its zeitgeisty style, matched with “inventive and well-presented” fish and seafood cooking, with ingredients from ‘regenerative producers’, and an “interesting” list of low-intervention wines. “I’m not a great fan of small plates but we decided to have every dish on the menu – and it has to be said they were all excellent.”
9. The Plimsoll British, Modern restaurant in Finsbury Park 52 St Thomas's Road - N4
Ever-changing and fantastic small plates served by an ambitious chef duo won praise for Jamie Allan and Ed McIlroy in their two years at The Compton Arms in Islington. With the aid of a Kickstarter campaign, they have converted a clapped-out old boozer (The Auld Triangle) in Finsbury Park to be this new forever home, set to open in Autumn 2021.
