“A good standard is maintained” at Eric & Christiana Piedaniel’s Gallic venture of over 25 years’ standing – a smartly decorated and comfortable venue, which inhabits a high-ceilinged, characterful oak-beamed room and which serves traditional French cuisine that’s “good value”.

“Fischers is almost a by-word for elegant country-house dining in the Peak District” – “the food is creative and tasty”, and “a really attentive team looks after you”. “The setting is hugely impressive”, too: “a grand house that still feels warm and friendly”, a short drive from the even more impressive Chatsworth. Top Menu Tip – “they have a fantastic pastry chef” – so leave room for pudding.

An “old manor house hotel with fabulous food”, in the Peak District National Park close to Chatsworth, that has “a slightly old-fashioned feel – i.e. American tourists would love it”. The dining room can seem on the “formal” side, but dishes are “really excellent”. Top Menu Tip – “dessert, a raspberry financier with an apricot and cream, was bloody lovely – couldn’t be improved”.

2022 Review: This “lovely gastropub” on the Duke of Devonshire’s Chatsworth estate gets mostly positive feedback for its “good food and real ales”. There’s sometimes a perception, though, that “it falls short” of its potential: “the cooking was fair, but it could be so nice here”.

“Delightful food”, “prepared with love and care”, is on Derbyshire-born chef Lee Smith’s menu at the crowdfunded restaurant he opened three years ago, having quit as head chef at Michelin-starred Samphire on Jersey. There’s a “lovely ambience” in the cleverly modernised historic building, and everything tastes “fresh and delicious”.
