In a “great location” by the River Ouse, this characterful gastropub was opened 11 years ago by chef Andrew Pern as a city counterpart to his acclaimed Star Inn at Harome in North Yorkshire. “The cuisine still fails to meet expectations”, though – a recurrent theme, with reporters describing it as “good but not spectacular” or at best “better than expected given the poor reviews”.

Acclaimed Yorkshire chef Andrew Pern’s city version of his famous Star Inn at Harome (which he spent last year rebuilding after a disastrous fire) has a “lively atmosphere, excellent food, efficient service and good setting” on the River Ouse, making it “ideal for family celebrations”. Its ratings are dragged down by a significant minority of reporters who feel it is “distinctly average in all respects, given the prices charged”.

A “lovely”, “bright and airy venue on the River Ouse” plays host to this city spin-off from Andrew Pern’s well-known Star Inn at Harome, 25 miles to the north. It would surely rate higher were it not for a feeling in some quarters that it offers “nice” or “distinctly average” bistro food “at fine-dining prices”.

Andrew Pern’s gastropub offshoot from the Star Inn at Harome continues to inspire unusually mediocre feedback, with a majority of reports finding it severely “overrated” and with “OTT prices for the quality of the food”. Why, then, is it “very busy”? – it has a “lovely setting over the river” with “the best waterside terrace in the city (worth a visit for a drink if nothing else!)”

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

"Nice British food, clearly from Andrew Pern, a focus on local, seasonal produce paying dividends. Not quite at the level of The Star but little if anything to fault."

"Ever since Andrew and the team came into town after the fire the food and service levels here after been up a notch or two. Absolutely wonderful food, autumn is his time of year with the game season upon us- locally sourced from a butcher I use. Big thumbs up. "

"Dined here yesterday and tried the new summer menu and I have to say that the whole experience was incredible. From the moment me and my partner arrived the staff went above and beyond to cater to our needs and we sat on the beautiful outdoor terrace that overlooks the river. I opted for the Yorkshire lamb loin which was spectacular and my partner had the BBQ Maple bacon that she absolutely loved. This is the best restaurant in York in my opinion given the food, location and level of service. Will be back soon and hope to try a few more of the signature cocktails!"
