“In the centre of the gorgeous village of Upton Magna”, Martin Board & wife Mel’s “lovely country pub-with-rooms” won nothing but praise this year; despite the seventeenth-century setting, the “food is far from traditional and leans towards modern British – all absolutely delicious and expertly served” (with “particularly good fish dishes” a highlight); add in “sensible prices”, and it’s a “standout restaurant in Shropshire”.

Melanie Board & husband Martin, a self-taught chef, relocated their fine-dining restaurant from Wrockwardine, a couple of villages away, to this seventeenth-century inn some years back, and are now the holders of three AA rosettes. Reporters this year hailed their “excellent food – not at all pretentious” but amounting to a “gastronomic experience with a reasonable price” (£59 for the six-course tasting menu, rounded out by roasts, à la carte etc.). A stone's throw away, you'll find their Village Store & Café, geared towards walkers and cyclists.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
