This “old pub with delicious food” is thriving under its new owners, chef Jeremy Parke and his sommelier wife Rachael, who have “maintained the standards and brought some of their own dishes to the menu” – and there’s still “a great atmosphere in the ‘anything but standard’ layout of the dining rooms”. Top Menu Tips – “the Norfolk crab and roast monkfish are both musts”.

“Eating is simply a delight” at this “lovely old pub with quirky little dining rooms” and a menu that “focuses on top-quality local ingredients”. Chef Jeremy Parke and his wife Rachael, formerly of Relish in Newton Flotman and Number 29 in Burnham Market, took over after our annual diners’ poll in summer 2023 from Ben & Sarah Handley, who left after 10 years at the helm; we are leaving the ratings untouched, with Rachael saying the approach would remain largely the same, with the addition of small plates to the food menu and cocktails to the bar.

“It is great to see the ever-growing number of plaudits for this restaurant” – this family-run gastroboozer has an “ever-growing” army of fans (including Giles Coren of The Times). “Last visited in 2012” – a year before chef-landlord Ben Handley and his wife Sarah took over – “when we walked out after being ignored by the staff. Wow, how it’s changed! Buzzy atmosphere, friendly and helpful staff, food interesting, fresh and perfectly cooked”. There’s now a garden room annexe to the 300-year-old pub to accommodate demand.

“Good local produce is cooked imaginatively” from a “good if limited menu” at this “busy” but “efficient” gastroboozer; refreshingly, it's a true family business comprising chef Ben Handley, co-owner wife Sarah and his brother Sam as GM.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
